Supercommittee Facts


  • Jurisdiction of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction: To reduce the deficit by at least 1.5 trillion dollars over the period of fiscal years 2012 to 2021, the Joint Committee will provide recommendations and legislative language that will significantly improve the short-term and long-term fiscal imbalance of the federal government. The Joint Committee will vote on a report that contains detailed recommendations for legislation to reduce the deficits no later than November 23, 2011. The Joint Committee will submit its report and recommendations to the President, the Vice President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the majority and minority Leaders of each House of Congress no later than December 2, 2011. The vote on passage of the Joint Committee’s report will occur no later than December 23, 2011. The Joint Committee will terminate on January 31, 2012.
