The National Governors Association is Well Connected

Over the weekend the National Governors Association (NGA) held their annual winter meeting in Washington, D.C.  The group describes itself as a bipartisan organization of the nation’s governors dealing collectively with matters of public policy.  Its winter meeting is the prime time for its members to schmooze with the leaders of D.C.’s public policy worlds.  While the NGA does not lobby, the organization has a well-built network of relationships in D.C. through its current and former staffer that would rival those of some of D.C.’s more experience lobbying groups.  The current crop of NGA staffers includes individuals who have worked in Congress, as lobbyists, and former federal agency employees.   The the current and former staffers of the NGA give the group strong current connections to 5 members of Congress, 3 congressional committees, 3 federal agencies and 6 lobbying organizations.  These relationships make the NGA a formidable presence in the advocacy arena.   Additionally, the NGA is a spring board for people looking to climb the D.C. ladder.  Former NGA staffers have gone on to become lobbyists, Chiefs of Staffs for Members of Congress, and top federal agency officials.
