Phil Gramm Launches DC Firm

Former Sen. Phil Gramm (R-TX) has started his own firm in Washington, Politico reported Tuesday.

On its web site, Gramm Partners describes itself as a public policy firm experienced in the issues confronting financial companies.

Gramm is senior partner, overseeing the firm’s policy advisory team in Washington.

Gramm served six years as a representative and 18 years as a senator before choosing not to seek re-election in 2002. He began his congressional career as a Democrat, but switched to the Republican Party in 1983.

He was national co-chairman for John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008. He also served until December 2011 as vice chairman of UBS AG.

Gramm was a registered lobbyist for UBS Americas from 2005 to 2007.

Gramm Partners registered Akin Gump as its first lobby client last week. Michael Solon, former legislative director to Gramm, has registered as a lobbyist for the firm.

Solon, who is a consultant to Akin Gump, told Politico that it hasn’t been decided yet whether Gramm will also register to lobby.

Other partners at the new firm include Steve McMillin, former deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget; and Asli Ay, former senior client relationship officer at UBS.
