U.S. Companies Register to Lobby EU

As the influence business goes global, more governments are adopting or considering ways to track lobbying activity.

Canada, Australia, Germany and several other nations have registries. The UK is planning one.

The European Union, encompassing 27 European countries, has a voluntary system called the “Transparency Register.” Launched last year, it replaced an earlier version that had come under heavy criticism.

The new system also has its critics, who say many lobbying organizations have failed to register. As of last month, there were fewer than 4,800 organizations listed.

A search of the register database shows 116 U.S.-based companies and organizations. (See below.)

The EU registry is much less demanding than U.S. lobbying law. Each company provides the name of the person in charge of EU relations, a general description of business activities, fields of interest and “estimated costs” of representing company concerns to EU institutions.

This last category, of course, is the most interesting. Our table below shows U.S. registrants and the amounts spent during the last fiscal year.

Leading the list is Apco Worldwide, which lists U.S.-based clients. Those with the greatest lobbying activity were Dow Corning, Depository Trust & Clearing Corp., Microsoft and SAB Miller.
