Food Industry – Q1 2012 Lobbying

Here is a quick look at some of the lobbying done over the last few months by some of the major players in the food industry, both producers and providers, all of which have seen their lobbying increase or stay the same.

The Hershey Company: Increased lobbying 35% from the previous quarter

  • Spent $237,000 in Q1 2012, up $62,000 from Q4 2011 when they spent $175,000.
  • Lobbying issues: Issues relating to obesity and nutrition as they impact the advertising and marketing of processed foods and beverages to consumers; sugar, peanut and dairy program structure and their implementation; biofuels, food crops and implications on supply/demand and pricing; 2010 Food Modernization Act; Rules of origin, cocoa, chocolate and confectionery.

Kraft Foods Global, Inc.: Spent the same amount on lobbying as the previous quarter

  • Spent $670,000 in both Q1 2012 and Q4 2011
  • Lobbying issues: S. 685 & H.R. 1739, Free Sugar Act of 2011; S. 1715, Dairy Pricing Reform and Farmer Protection Act of 2011 (Dairy Policy Reform); Food Marketing (Marketing to Children);  H.R. 763 – Safe and Efficient Transportation Act of 2011 (Truck Weights)

McDonald’s Corporation: Increased lobbying 23% from the previous quarter

  • Spent $530,000 in Q1 2012 up $100,000 from Q4 2011 when they spent $430,000
  • Lobbying issues: Implementation of menu labeling provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Healthcare Act enacted 2010; e-verify legislative proposals and comprehensive immigration reform proposals; Debit Interchange Fee Study Act of 2011 ; Burdensome Data Collection Relief Act (provision 1062) (provision repealing Securities & Exchange Commission requirements relating to executive compensation)

Monsanto Company: Increased lobbying 16% from the previous quarter

  • Spent $1,410,000 in Q4 2012, up $200,000 from Q4 2011 when they spent $1,210,000.
  • Lobbying issues: Natural Resources Conservation Service Program, H.R. 871, Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act of 2011; Mineral Licensing and Royalty Issues; food labeling

Starbucks Corporation: Increased lobbying 33% from the previous quarter

  • Spent $160,000 in Q4 2012 up $40,000 from Q4 2011 when they spent $120,000.
  • Lobbying issues: tax proposals regarding foreign income; Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act; financial reform related to interchange
