K Street Sits Out Student Loan Rate Debate

Student loan rates have been a hotly debated issue both on the campaign trail and in congress.  While the issue is gaining the attention of politicians and the public, so far it has failed to grab the attention of the lobbying industry.  The First Street  Research Group examined the 35 student loan related bills from the 112th congress and found that the majority of the bills had very little, if any, lobbying activity.  Not surprisingly the bulk of the lobbying around student loan education is conducted by universities and lenders.

Highlights

  • Only 14 of 35 student loan bills had any lobbying activity and only 2 of those bills have been lobbied by 10 or more organizations.
  • All but one of the student loan bills with lobbying activity was introduced by Democrats.
  • 35 organizations and over 100 lobbyists lobbied student loan legislation in the 112th congress.
  • 84 Organizations have specifically mentioned lobbying on student loans
  • Sallie Mae, Bayer and the American Bankers Association were the only groups that spent over a million dollars in one quarter of lobbying and lobbied a student loan related bill
