Gerard’s short stint as a GOP staffer for the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation—chaired at the time by Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona—was sufficient to launch his career on K Street and eventually land him at Podesta Group, Inc., one of the top lobbying firms. Before joining the firm in 2004, he worked at EOP Group where he lobbied for funding for the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear-waste repository in Nevada. At Podesta, he serves clients on issues ranging from energy and environment to telecommunications and health care. In the first three quarters of 2011, he served 56 clients who paid nearly $9.4 million—the highest paying of which was Career Education Corp. Lockheed Martin, ranked 52nd among Fortune 100 companies,—is his second-highest-paying client, seeking lobbying primarily on defense spending and authorization measures as it sought contracts on a number of systems, such as the F-16. Lockheed also became embroiled in controversy in 2011 regarding cost overruns and mechanical problems with the production of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Gerard’s clients also include the top-ranked company on the Fortune 100 list—Walmart Stores Inc., which sought the firm’s help on health care and corporate-tax-reform issues. Other clients include General Motors Co., General Dynamics Corp., United Technologies Corp., and several trade associations. Gerard works with Israel Klein, a former deputy staff director of communications for Rep. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass.; Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who served clients who paid nearly $8.3 million; and former Hill staffer Paul Brathwaite, who served clients paying more than $7 million. Gerard’s mother is former state senator Susan Gerard, a Phoenix Republican who also worked for former Democratic governor Janet Napolitano as director of the Arizona Department of Health Services.
