Having spent two decades as a House member from California, several of them as a member of the Democratic leadership, Vic Fazio has established himself as one of Washington’s best-connected lobbyists. He is a senior adviser at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld—one of K Street’s most formidable firms—whose client list is studded with Fortune 100 giants such as Johnson & Johnson Inc., Anheuser-Busch, Archer Daniels Midland, and Honeywell International. Other colleagues include former representative Bill Paxon and Barney Skladany. With more than 50 clients, Fazio helped bring in more than $10.3 million through the third quarter of 2011. Fazio has long been respected for his smarts and down-to-earth manner, as well as his close ties to such fellow Californians as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. He told Politico that many lawmakers who go into lobbying don’t get to know the lobbyists and interest groups outside of their districts and states, and they need to broaden their horizons about the numerous other parts of the influence industry: “If you want to be respected in the world of Washington outside the Capitol, you need to make yourself open to that, and you learn a lot.” Fazio came to Akin Gump after eight years at Clark & Weinstock.
